DOJ Charges 25-Plus Tren de Aragua Members in Nationwide Operation

The Department of Justice announced charges against more than 25 individuals across six federal districts as part of a coordinated crackdown on Tren de Aragua (TdA), a Venezuelan street gang designated as a foreign terrorist organization [1]. The operation, conducted under Joint Task Force Vulcan, resulted in the seizure of more than 80 firearms, approximately 18 kilograms of narcotics, and more than $100,000 in cash [1][2]. Charges span firearms trafficking, drug trafficking, and related offenses filed in the Districts of Colorado, Southern Florida, Northern Indiana, Middle Tennessee, Western Tennessee, and Eastern Washington [1].

TdA received its foreign terrorist organization designation from the State Department earlier in 2025, a classification that expands the statutory tools available to federal prosecutors and carries enhanced sentencing exposure for members convicted of material support offenses [1]. Joint Task Force Vulcan, a multi-agency body coordinating TdA enforcement, draws personnel from the FBI, DEA, ATF, Homeland Security Investigations, and IRS Criminal Investigation [1][2]. The May 11 action represents the largest single charging operation against the gang to date, bringing total federal charges filed since January 2025 to more than 260 [3].

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel were identified as senior officials overseeing the announcement [1]. The geographic spread of the indictments, from the Pacific Northwest to South Florida, signals that prosecutors are treating TdA not as a locally contained threat but as a nationally distributed criminal enterprise, a framing consistent with how the terrorism designation was applied and how task force resources were allocated [1][2].

The cases now move to individual district courts where defendants will be arraigned and detention hearings scheduled. The multi-district structure means no single judge or circuit will control the litigation's overall trajectory, though common factual and legal questions about TdA's organizational structure and terrorism designation could generate parallel motion practice across venues. Additional charges are expected as Joint Task Force Vulcan continues active investigations [1][3].
