DOJ Charges Eight Tren de Aragua Members in Texas and Illinois

The Department of Justice announced federal charges on July 2, 2026, against eight alleged members of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organization, for murders, kidnappings, and firearms offenses committed in Texas and Illinois [1][2]. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel announced the charges at a press conference, framing the prosecutions as part of a sustained federal offensive against the gang [1][3].

The Dallas indictment names five defendants charged in connection with the kidnapping of a father and his two young children and the subsequent murder of the father [1][2]. A separate Chicago indictment charges three additional defendants with murdering a man in May 2026 [2][3]. The charges include kidnapping resulting in death, murder, and related firearms counts, all carrying severe federal penalties. Tren de Aragua was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity earlier in the Trump administration, a classification that broadens the statutory tools available to federal prosecutors and increases sentencing exposure for members [1][2].

The prosecutions fall under Operation Take Back America, a DOJ-led initiative targeting Tren de Aragua and affiliated transnational criminal networks across the United States [3]. Since January 2025, more than 350 alleged Tren de Aragua members have been charged or convicted under that initiative [2][3]. The July 2 announcement also included separate charges against members of United Cartels, a distinct transnational criminal organization, underscoring the breadth of the concurrent enforcement campaign [2]. Andrew Boutros, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Ryan Raybould, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, are overseeing the respective prosecutions [1][3].

All eight defendants face arraignment proceedings in their respective districts. Given the terrorist designation, prosecutors retain the option to pursue material-support theories in addition to the direct criminal counts already filed. Defense counsel had not yet entered appearances in publicly available dockets as of the announcement date. No trial dates have been set.
