Federal Grand Jury Indicts 22 in Northwest Indiana Gambling and Extortion Case

A federal grand jury in Hammond, Indiana returned a 28-count indictment charging 22 individuals with operating an illegal gambling enterprise, conspiracy to commit extortion, money laundering, and related offenses [1][2]. The indictment, unsealed April 29, 2026, targets the Gerodemos Gambling Organization, which prosecutors allege ran a multi-state illegal sports betting and extortion operation from January 2021 through April 2026 [1][3].

James "Jimmy the Greek" Gerodemos and Dean "Dean Gem" Gialamas are named as the lead defendants [2][3]. Prosecutors allege the organization used two Northwest Indiana restaurants, Gino's Steakhouse in Merrillville and Paragon in Hobart, as fronts to conduct and collect illegal sports wagers and to extort customers and associates [1][2]. Chris Gerodemos and Timothy O'Malley are among the additional named defendants [2]. The charges implicate conduct spanning multiple states, with the restaurants serving as the operational hub for bookmaking, debt collection, and laundering of proceeds [3].

FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation agents executed raids on both restaurant locations on the morning of April 29, 2026, the same day the indictment was unsealed [1][3]. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Indiana is prosecuting the case. Federal prosecutors brought the charges under statutes governing illegal gambling businesses, the Hobbs Act for extortion, and federal money laundering provisions [2][3]. The operation's name, "Operation Porterhouse Parlay," references both the restaurant setting and the sports betting activity at the center of the alleged enterprise.

All 22 defendants face arraignment in the Northern District of Indiana. If convicted on the lead gambling and extortion counts, defendants face substantial federal prison exposure. The money laundering charges carry penalties of up to 20 years per count under 18 U.S.C. § 1956 [2]. No trial date has been set. Defense counsel positions for the majority of defendants had not been publicly confirmed as of the time of reporting.
