Kansas City Jury Awards $750K in Finder’s Fee Dispute Against Fortress

John T. Beckman, a St. Louis attorney, brought a breach-of-contract claim against Fortress Investment Group after the global investment firm declined to pay a finder's fee Beckman alleged he was owed for facilitating a roughly $100 million acquisition of a Missouri gas station and convenience store chain [1]. The case proceeded to a jury trial in Jackson County Circuit Court in Kansas City, Missouri, with Beckman represented by Christopher O. Miller of Amundsen Davis and Fortress defended by multiple attorneys from Dowd Bennett [1].

The jury returned a verdict in Beckman's favor on June 3, 2026, awarding $750,000 in compensatory damages [1]. No punitive damages were reported. Beckman, a solo attorney, prevailed against an institutional defendant represented by a multi-lawyer defense team [1].

The verdict resolves the core contract dispute, but post-trial motions remain possible and Fortress has not publicly announced whether it will seek to reduce the award or appeal the judgment. No sentencing or further damages proceedings apply given the absence of a punitive component.
