Leavenworth County Jury Convicts Lansing Man on Murder Charges

A Leavenworth County District Court jury convicted Dennis J. Brockenshire, 65, of Lansing, Kansas, on counts of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary on May 13, 2026, following a three-day trial [1]. The charges arose from an incident in June 2025, when officers responding to a mobile home discovered the victim on a couch with gunshot wounds [1]. Prosecutors brought both counts through to trial without apparent reduction, and the jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges [1].

At trial, the state presented physical and testimonial evidence linking Brockenshire to the shooting. Evidence included statements attributed to Brockenshire describing kicking in the door and discharging a firearm, ammunition matched to the scene, and gunshot residue recovered from his hands and clothing [1]. The three-day proceeding ended with the jury finding that evidence sufficient to support conviction on both the homicide and the unlawful entry component [1].

Brockenshire now faces sentencing, though no date has been scheduled as of publication [1]. Under Kansas law, a first-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole eligibility determined by the sentencing court. Post-trial motion practice and any direct appeal would proceed through the Kansas Court of Appeals.
